Qualifications/Registrations

Currently, Occupational Therapists must be registered to practice is Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia. If your qualifications were gained outside Australia you need to apply to the Council of Occupational Therapists Registration Board (COTRB) for recognition of your qualifications to enable you to become eligible for registration in the above mentioned states.

In Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory registration is not required. However, if you want to work as an Occupational Therapist in a government-funded agency (i.e. a public hospital or a community health centre), you are normally expected to have qualifications acceptable to Occupational Therapy (OT) Australia — the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists. Initial membership of OT Australia requires recognition of qualifications by the Council of Occupational Therapists (COTRB).

Anyone who does not hold an Australian or New Zealand passport will need an appropriate Visa or Work Permit to work in Australia. Two popular options are:

Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday Visa provides an opportunity for people between 18 and 30 to holiday in Australia and supplement their travel funds through employment. You can do any kind of work but work for more than six months with any one employer is not permitted.
